Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken prior to development. A desk-based assessment had revealed some archaeological potential. Fieldwalking produced dispersed scatters of flint artefact including several tools, single sherds of possible Saxon and Roman pottery and some quantities of medieval and later pottery. Thirty-four trial trenches and three contingency trenches were excavated, which defined a spatially discrete foci of activity within the Study Area. The site was probably a settlement from the Iron Age/Roman period. By the 12th century the church of All Saints' had been constructed and a shift of settlement away from the river to a roadside location had occurred. The evaluation uncovered the remains of an iron smelting furnace and associated spread of tap slag. Its location was interesting as it was isolated and appeared to lack easy access to the raw materials needed for iron smelting. [Au(adp)] |
