Abstract: This report provided an archaeological assessment of Lesbury Bridge and the adjacent site of Lesbury Mill. Extensive documentary records relating to Lesbury Mill were available from the late medieval period onwards. The known mill complex which survived until 1964 was probably first constructed c.1770 and was the product of steady growth during the following 70-80 years. Fieldnames on 17th and 18th century maps demonstrated that a mill had been located on the same site at an earlier date. This probably represented the mill documented by 16th and early 17th century surveys and terriers and may have been constructed in 1523. It most likely went out of use in the mid 17th century as a result of a failure to repair damage caused by flooding, although a map of 1624 suggested the mill may already have ceased to exist by that date. It was uncertain whether the Lesbury Mill referred to in medieval documents was also situated at this point or was located further upstream at the site later designated Longhoughton Mill and allocated for the use of the latter township. It was conceivable that the construction of Lesbury Mill on its traditional site was associated in some way with the erection of the adjacent stone bridge over the Aln, but this could not be conclusively demonstrated. Significant potential may have existed for the survival of structures and deposits associated with these historic mills. Accordingly, a programme of evaluation involving geophysical survey and trial trenching was proposed to establish the extent, preservation and character of any such features, in order to determine the full archaeological impact of the proposed road improvement and inform decision-making regarding any further mitigation work which may be required.
