Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was carried out on the proposed development site. A narrow watercourse parallel to the river crossed the site, until it was backfilled in 1906. A metalled Roman road was known in the vicinity although its position and course was uncertain. Medieval use of the site was likely to have been a combination of river-trade related activities, the cloth industry and small-scale ironstone mining on unoccupied land, of which evidence may be present. In the 17th century, cloth-stretching tenters were recorded on the site. Buildings certainly existed alongside The Calls in 1725, part of the course of a road survived until the 20th century. Local goits had dyehouses sited along them in the mid-18th century, and such features may have been present within the study area. The presence of riverside wharfage of the medieval and post-medieval periods was probable and the potential for environmental remains, including timber structures surviving in waterlogged conditions was high. Remains of the existing buildings still exist, most had deep basements, which had probably removed earlier archaeological deposits, limiting the archaeological potential for this part of the site.
