Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during the groundworks for the construction of a building for use as a library and customer service centre. The site of the development lies on the eastern side of the area of Roman settlement. Six visits were made to the site to monitor the site topsoil strip and excavated foundation trenches. The topsoil was stripped from the entire development area. A small test pit was monitored and this measured 1.80m wide by 1.50m long. The proposed building was an inverted L shape and covered an area measuring 44m by 17m on the north-south axis and 20m by 14m on the west-east axis. The raft foundations did not exceed 0.50m. Apart from the presence of post-medieval land-drains on the site, no archaeological features were identified and no finds recovered. |
