Abstract: |
Building record of late 19th century Primitive Methodist chapel before conversion to dwelling. Evaluation on street frontage in area or new build. Austere brick built with gault dressings and round-headed window to upper level. Converted to commercial usage during second half of 20th-century, latterly as Burton and Son butchers. Interiors and fitings have been removed to create working areas and a flat above the shop. Externally much of the character remains. Evaluation discovered part of a ditch believed to be the inside edge of the castle inner bailey ditch, badly truncated by the cellar to a probable late medieval structure. In the 19th century a vaulted brick foundation plinth was built on the edge of the cellar to support the south-west corner rear of a later building. To reinstate the area behind, the celler was backfilled against the plinth. |
