Abstract: |
A Compass Archaeology evaluation took place on the 24th July 2007. The evaluation was carried out as a condition of planning consent, prior to redevelopment of the site. The area has the potential for archaeological features, in particular previous archaeological investigations just to the east of the site have revealed features and environmental remains of late Bronze and early Iron Age date. The evaluation revealed that the footprint of the proposed new build had been extensively truncated by large 20th century concrete foundations that criss-crossed the site. Five small evaluation trenches were investigated, but no archaeological finds or features were encountered. A clean alluvial and geological sequence was recorded across the site. The sequence was of a alluvial clay overlying a lens of gravel overlying a further thick clay deposit. No further archaeological work is required in consideration of this planning application. |
