Abstract:
A desk-based assessment revealed that the building comprised the standing remains of the Newland Mill, which had medieval origins and had been acquired by the Newland Company in 1746 so that they could control the water supply in the valley and use it for their new iron furnace. This continued in operation until the late 19th century, as did the mill, although the latter was probably badly damaged by a devasting flood in 1918 and subsequently used for storage. The building recording revealed re-used material some of which may have been medieval or early post-medieval in date and that the surviving structure initially comprised the main mill, with a corn drying kiln to the north. It was subsequently raised in height by another storey with a brick extension, which seems to have also led to a reorganisation of the internal flooring. Later alterations seem to have largely been concerned with the point at which the building went out of use, including the removal of the first floor in both the mill and kiln. The watching brief identified some areas of interest , including evidence for the location of iron ore dumps adjacent to the site. A section through the head race and the structure of the wheel pit were also recorded. A number of finds were made, including fragments of millstones, one perhaps of medieval date, and an iron tilt hammer head. The building recording and watching brief show that there is physical evidence for an earlier mill on on near the site, which may have been medieval in date. It is not certain, however, whether the existing building was built following the acquisition of the site by the Newland Company or whether they remodelled an existing mill. It is evident that the building was substantially remodelled at a later date, and this, coupled with the tilt hammer head recovered from the site and the documentary sources indicates that the mill had incorporated a forge in some way.
