Abstract:
In order to assess the archaeological risk posed by a proposal to construct a new building, and ancillary works at the Castle Street campus of Berkhamsted Collegiate School, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the school to undertake an archaeological desk-based assessment of the site, and an appraisal of the standing structures. A study of archive and database material relating to Berkhamsted has indicated that there is a moderate to high risk that evidence of activity from Roman to medieval periods may survive on the site, which has been built up from the middle of the post-medieval period. Such potential evidence is most likely to be affected by the development in the former garden areas between the Castle Street and Mill Street frontages. None of the extant buildings on the site are considered to be of historical or cultural merit or value.
