Abstract: |
An extensive programme of field evaluation was undertaken prior to the redevelopment of the airport. Within the boundary of the airport are the remains of a Roman Camp, the Stanegate Roman road, various remains of prehistoric origin, and the former RAF aerodrome itself. A total of 225 trenches were excavated. Although the construction of the airfield had resulted in disturbance across much of the site, a number of pits and postholes were found and tentatively dated to the late Neolithic or Bronze Age period by the discovery of a flint from one of the fills. Former field boundaries of medieval or early post-medieval date were also found. |
