Abstract:
Pre-Construct Archaeology (Lincoln) was commissioned by Space Build to undertake an archaeological watching brief on land off Enterprise Way, Castleford, West Yorkshire (at the site of an Aldi store) during the construction of an extension to the store. The objectives of this watching brief were to monitor the groundwork associated with the construction of the extension. All archaeological deposits identified during the excavations were subject to limited excavation, in order to assess their nature, dimensions and to facilitate the retrieval of datable finds. As a result of this work, contexts and key features were identified including substantial tip lines and dump deposits which reflect the re-deposition of modern industrial residue. Relict building remains of a possible 18th century date were also recorded.
