Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was maintained during the groundworks associated with the construction of a new driveway, fence post excavations and cattle grid excavations, at Greyfriars, Winchelsea, East Sussex (NGR 590467 116949). The line of the new driveway tried to follow the line of the original medieval road which separated Quarters 28 and 33 before turning northwards between Quarters 27 and 28. The northern extent of the road crossed through an area formerly occupied by Monday Market. Following a detailed archaeological evaluation (Collings 2007) the depth of the medieval road surface was established below current ground level. The impact levels of ground reduction in advance of the construction of the new driveway was not thought deep enough to impact on the medieval road surface. The watching brief, maintained during these groundworks, proved that the road surface was mostly not impacted upon. One small area of possible road surface was revealed, and this was recorded appropriately. No archaeological features or finds were recorded during the excavations in advance of fence post excavations and cattle grid excavations. |
