Abstract: |
An architectural evaluation of the farmhouse at Frosthwaite Farm, which is Grade II Listed, was carried out to support a planning application. Documentary evidence indicated that the name Frosthwaite was recorded as early as 1255, but that although there was a hall on the site in 1344, it was probably rebuilt after 1581. The investigation of the building revealed that the earliest elements related to a typical yeoman farmhouse of the region, which was almost certainly cruck-framed and had a large fireplace with a smoke hood supported by a bressumer beam, and a spice cupboard at the east end. The building was subsequently raised in height and a two storey extension was added, possibly designed to house handloom workers, evidenced in part by the unusually large number of windows. |
