Abstract: |
As part of conservation of a Grade II Listed Building it was proposed to remove the central staircase and replace it with a lift. A programme of recording was required prior to this taking place. The building was constructed in 1873 for William Gradwell as part of a pair of grouped shops either side of the Cumberland Union Bank to the designs of the architects Paley and Austin of Lancaster. The building recording revealed that while the staircase was undoubtedly original it had been modified in the 20th century, principally with the addition of an iron column with attached horizontal struts up the centre of the stairwell. |
