Abstract:
On May 2nd 2006 [date] Oxford Archaeology (OA) carried out an archaeological watching brief in the courtyard of the Moon and Sixpence restaurant behind the Octagon Chapel, Bath.[location and National Grid Reference] The work was commissioned by L and R Group to monitor a small engineering test pit. [client(s)]tomonitor the excavation of [development] The watching brief revealed similar buried deposits to the upper levels of the three trenches watched previously (OA 2005b), medieval or early post-medieval garden soils. As the trench was against the rear wall of 3, Broad Street, it also revealed the footings of this building, thought to be of 16th century date, and the foundation trench and its fills. The trench showed that the existing dark garden soil was sealed by a pitched stone paving. Under the 20th century disturbance these both pre-dated the construction of the footings. A single small sherd from the foundation trench fill was of 17th to 18th century date, suggesting that this part of 3, Broad Street was built after 1600. No other structures or deposits earlier than the 20th century were revealed in the trench.
