Abstract: |
An archaeological trench evaluation was undertaken by AC archaeology as a condition of planning permission for the erection of six dwellings and construction of new access, on land behind Linhay Close, Culmstock. The site is located on the NW side of the village in what is currently an agricultural field. The main archaeological interest for the site is that it is situated c. 20m to the north of a small, single-ditched, possibly prehistoric enclosure, recorded as a cropmark from aerial photographs (DCHER ref. 60218). The evaluation comprised the machine-excavation of one trench, with this located along the central footprint of the new houses. There was no in situ evidence for archaeological activity within the trench, with a small quantity of finds dating from the early post-medieval period through to the 20th century. The majority of pottery recovered is small abraded sherds and these are likely to relate to episodes of manuring of the field. No remains relating to the nearby prehistoric enclosure were recorded, with the only potential find of this period comprising the small piece of unworked and imported burnt flint. |
