Abstract:
Oxford Archaeology carried out an extended watching brief on the site of the new Clore Learning Centre. On this site is a 17th Century Barrack Block near the Trophy Gate on the West side of the palace. The Project consisted of three phases, an evaluation, consisting of some test trenches; a watching brief to monitor the trenches dug for building services by the contractors which were recorded as archaeological actions; and a building recording exercise conducted while the 1689 barrack block was refurbished. Foundations, possibly for a wall of a 1662 barracks was located as was a patch of brick floor thought to be of the same structure. Glimpses of a building illustrated by Cosimo de Medici in 1169 which is thought to be timber framed. Cast Iron columns, introduced in the late 18th or early 19th century were observed and are thought to be very early examples of their kind. They were the end of stall divisions in the cavalry barracks and supported a second floor. The west end of the barracks contained latrines and soil pits possibly constructed when the Subtlery in the early 18th century was built. The buildings recording sequenced the barracks upper floor in the early 18th century and subsequent subdivision and ordering, also construction detail of the roof and floor. Comparatively rare 'bottle bricks' were located on site but with no context: it is suggested that they were stored here for use elsewhere and may have become part of a subsequent backfill.
