Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment undertaken in advance of a proposed residential development in two pasture fields located within the Conservation Area for Furness Abbey to the west (Scheduled Ancient Monument No. 13572), and also bounded by the Grade I Listed abbey precinct wall. The assessment revealed that there is documentary evidence for a medieval village known as Sellergarth formerly located to the west of the abbey, which was destroyed to create a deer park. An estate map labels the proposed development area as 'Seller Butts' possibly suggesting an association with the former village. |
