Abstract: |
Prior to the conversion of the mid-19th-century St Peter's Church to a series of apartments, a programme of photographic building recording was carried out. Archaeological observation of groundworks associated with the redevelopment of the church recorded evidence for a series of brick-built burial vaults within the churchyard. One large vault was recorded, which belonged to the family of the third incumbent of the Church, a Reverend Charles Thornhill. Only a small amount of skeletal material was recorded and this was reinterred in the burial vault from which it came. The graveyard area had been considerably disturbed during removal of gravestones from their original positions in the cemetery to the periphery of the site in the 1970s, and it is possible that the majority of inhumations survive at a much greater depth than that of the groundworks of the current development. A programme of recording the gravestones that had to be moved from the periphery of the churchyard was also carried out. |
