Abstract: |
A multi-phased archaeological project involving excavation, preservation in situ and watching brief works undertaken between March and May 2006 by within the churchyard. In total 135 medieval and post-medieval burials were recorded and 116 skeletons assessed. The archaeological work was required in advance of the construction of a single storey extension on land within the historic graveyard and on the northern side of the nave wall of the church. The excavation followed on from the partial evaluation of the site by the Orpington and District Archaeological Society in 2001. The project also incorporated phases of foundation redesign to minimise the impact on areas of known archaeological deposits as they became apparent and a final phase of a watching brief and excavation. |
