Abstract:
Claydon, Burnside, Paper Mill Lane (CLY 031, TM 1275 4919) evaluation trenching across the site of a proposed barn on a sand and gravel terrace area between Paper Mill Lane and the River Gipping to the south of Claydon village revealed part of a large pit type feature of Early Anglo-Saxon date which also contained residual Roman period pottery sherds. While only a small part of the feature was revealed at the western end of the proposed barn structure in character the pit may be interpreted as part of a Grubenhaus or sunken-featured building. Pottery sherds of Early Anglo-Saxon date were recovered from the feature in addition to a small number of animal bones with one Red Deer burr fragment exhibiting evidence for antler working. Later monitoring of wall foundation trenches on two sides of the barn footprint and stanchion pads on the remaining long side did not reveal any further archaeological features or finds.
