Abstract: |
A small excavation was undertaken with local volunteers in the grounds of the St Drostan's Episcopal Church in Old Deer. The site, fronting onto the former market place in Abbey Street, was thought to have potential for surviving evidence of medieval and earlier settlement. The excavation revealed the foundations of two solid clay walls of neighbouring buildings at right angles to Abbey Street, with a cobbled pend between them. These appeared to have been in use until the church was built in 1851 but may have been built in the 18th or even 17th century. There was no surviving evidence of medieval activity. |
