Abstract: |
Watching Brief at the north western end of Castle Street, Carlisle as part of the Carlisle Roman Gateway Project. Groundworks monitoring included the excavation of a telecommunications trench, a tree planting pit and 3 pits for orientation beacons. The ground was found to be highly disturbed by 19th century and modern service runs. However at the south-east end of the telecommunications trench a small area of medieval deposits survived. These contained sherds of medieval pottery dating from the 12th to 14th centuries and pieces of iron slag. |
