Abstract:
In response to the requirements of a diocesan faculty, the Heritage Network has been commissioned by Purcell Miller Tritton Architects, acting on behalf of Old Harlow Parochial Church Council, to carry out a programme of archaeological monitoring during the groundworks for a new floor and boiler house at St. Mary's and St. Hugh's Church, Old Harlow, Essex. The monitoring programme inside the church revealed five brick built barrel vaults of varying sizes. Four of these structures were burial vaults and the other had served as an old boiler vault. Also revealed were the partial stone foundations of the demolished west tower, a brick floor surface and brick steps. Monitoring of the external service trenches and the ground reduction for the new boiler house, to the west of the north transept, revealed evidence for 19th structures and drains. Disarticulated human bone fragments, including a skull, were also encountered.
