Abstract:
Archaeological recording was undertaken as part of the Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust's 'On The Edge' project at Berry Head within two Napoleonic-era forts (Fort 1 and Fort 3). The work followed on from archaeological assessment and survey undertaken in 1989 and 1990, and an evaluation of one element of the project in 2008. In Fort 1 the causeway infill within the fort ditch was removed and replaced with a new bridge. The structural remains of the original drawbridge were recorded and its design reconstructed. The guardhouse, magazine and kitchen were excavated and the standing buildings recorded. A toy cannon was recovered from within the magazine. In Fort 3, through a combination of building recording and excavation, the development of the guardhouse and the Second World War/Cold War Royal Observer Corp building were further explored. Excavations also uncovered part of a timber-framed building, as well as part of another structure and rubbish pits dating to the mid 19th-century. A short length of a tunnel, forming part of a larger drainage system, was also uncovered.
