Abstract:
Watching brief on the excavation of foundation trenches for a block of three new houses on the NW side of the site, opposite the castle grounds. The site was within the area of the outer bailey in the early medieval period and was then absorbed within the late medieval town when the bailey was no longer in use. Medieval features comprising well-stratified probable quarry pits, layers and at least one rubbish pit were found immediately below the garage forecourt in the NW corner of the site. Monitoring works on a second block of houses on the south-eastern side of the site was not carried out due to high levels of modern disturabance from the garage, and for this reason it was piled. However, this area is supposed to be on the line of the outer bailey ditch.
