Abstract: |
Excavation of 13 test pits around the 15th-century guildhall, located next to Finchingfield churchyard. Any archaeological remains around the 2 outside walls has been disturbed in the 1950s when the building was refurbished as almshouses, which involved underpinning the foundations, cutting back the churchyard, new drainage and pathways. However, test pits in the passage at the south-east end found a medieval cobbled surface, pottery sherds and oyster and animal bone, despite being disturbed in the 1950s when the current passage surface was laid. |
