Abstract: |
An evaluation excavation together with the monitoring of some geotechnical boreholes was carried out at Highfield Junior School, Dallington Road, Eastbourne in advance of a planning decision on a number of planning applications for a nursery, classrooms and additional parking at the school. The evaluation showed that the ground at the front (south side) of the school had been made up during the early 20th century, with a deep deposit of material that had been brought into the site, from which an assemblage of pottery and glass was recovered. No evidence for a layer of peat was found, and no archaeological features were discovered during the evaluation. The monitoring of the boreholes on the north side of the school showed that there was no remaining topsoil or buried soil, suggesting that this had been removed during the building of the school. |
