Abstract:
The pipeline runs along the northern boundary of the Scheduled Monument of the Roman Settlement of Old Winteringham, and there is a possibility that part of Ermine Street Roman Road as well as other features and artefacts of the adjacent settlement could be disturbed. There is also a slight possibility of disturbing a Roman trackway near Ferriby Sluice. Works start immediately adjacent to Ferriby Sluice, which is a Scheduled Monument, but should not impact upon the monument. The proposed methodology of pipe bursting entails working almost entirely within the limits of the existing pipe trench, reducing the likelihood of disturbing archaeological deposits. As a result, it is suggested that maintenance of a watching brief during all groundworks will provide sufficient mitigation. It will be necessary to obtain Scheduled Monument Consent for the works adjacent to Old Winteringham Roman settlement.
