Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on land at Hawley Garden Centre, Hawley, Kent by Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd. The first phase was carried out on the 24th and 25th October 2011, with the second phase following on at 22nd, 23rd and 25th November 2011. The watching brief consisted of archaeological monitoring of the excavation of post pits around the Garden Centre in association with the construction of an open sided canopy to the rear of the centre and covered entrance to the front. The initial phase of work covered nineteen post pits related to the covered canopy, whilst the second phase was concerned with a further sixteen post pits for the covered entrance. The principle ojectiveof the watching brief was to monitor and examine the Lynch Hill and Taplow Gravel formations upon which the site was situated. These were laid down at the end of the last Interglacial and had potential for paleolithic remains. No finds or features of archaeological significance were observed.
