Abstract:
This report presents the results of a desk-based appraisal, walkover survey, geophysical survey, and historic visual impact assessment carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) on land at Tregray Villa, Davidstow, Cornwall, in advance of the construction of a single wind turbine. The proposed turbine would be located within the fields of the historic farmstead of Tregreen, first recorded in c.AD1220. The field names recorded in the 19th century suggest this area lay outside the medieval agricultural heartland and was enclosed from open downland during the post-medieval period. The walkover survey identified a series of slight mounds, but these mounds did not show up on the geophysical survey and may be related to the rationalisation of field boundaries in the later 19th century. The proposed turbine would be located on a wide east-west ridge north-east of Davidstow Church, part of the wider Delabole Plateau Landscape Character Area. A relatively small number of Listed buildings fall within its viewshed, and most are located at such a distance to minimise the impact of the proposed turbine, or are less sensitive to visual intrusion. However, the cumulative impact of wind turbines in this area is steadily growing. Most of the Scheduled Monuments in this area are Bronze Age barrows, which are particularly sensitive to visual intrusion. With this in mind, the overall impact of the proposed turbine can be assessed as negative/moderate, given the proximity and importance of the heritage assets concerned, and the growing importance of cumulative impact.
