Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Hall and Ensom Chartered Surveyors acting on behalf of The Diocese of Winchester, to undertake an archaeological watching brief during groundworks for an extension at Chaplains Lodge, St Mary's Close, Swathling, Southampton, centred on National Grid Reference (NGR) 443953 115431. The site lies immediately adjacent to St Mary's Church and the Planning Archaeologist at Southampton City Council advised a condition was imposed to ensure an archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the initial stages of development to record anything of archaeological interest. The groundworks comprised the machine excavation of foundation trenches associated with the new extension and a watching brief was maintained during the excavation. No archaeological features or deposits were encountered during the course of the works and no residual artefacts were encountered. |
