Abstract:
A programme of archaeological monitoring and recording was conducted during groundworks for repairs to the Vaudey Pond, at Grimsthorpe Park, Edenham. The pond is thought to have possible monastic origins, although its exact date of construction is not clear. It was quite likely altered into its current form, however, during the mid 18th century landscaping works undertaken at Grimsthorpe Park. Further alterations appear to have been conducted in the late 18th to early 19th century, with the addition of the brick and stone spillway in the north-east corner. The monitoring recorded the clay core of the eastern dam, although no dating evidence for this part of the structure was identified. A single bullet cartridge case was identified, however, attesting to the use of Grimsthorpe Park as a military training camp during the Second World War.
