Abstract:
The groundworks took place in May 2012, and were completed in September 2012. Of the seven replacement electricity poles proposed, only four were completed, three of which were subject to archaeological monitoring during the watching brief. The remainder were abandoned in favour of underground cables, as negotiated with the landowner. A total of 60m of trenching was subsequently excavated under archaeological supervision to accommodate this change. One of the poles (Number 3) was located in an area of earthworks, which were thought to represent putative remains of a Deserted Medieval Village (DMV). On speaking to the landowner, however, it became apparent that the earthworks were not archaeological in nature, but comprised spoil heaps from improvements to a nearby pond undertaken during the 1960s. On excavation of the foundation trench, nothing was identified to contradict the farmer's story, the turf lay directly on top of a clean redeposited natural backfill, with no sign of Medieval habitation. All of the other trenches proved archaeologically sterile, with the exception of a possible buried soil horizon recorded in part of the underground cable trench. No significant archaeology was therefore encountered.
