Reports limited trials NW of the fort, and observations elsewhere in the village: miscellaneous RB features appear agrarian in function and may belong to a vicus, but despite Birley's argument for a small Roman town there is no evidence for a town wall. Med features bear no relation to the present plan of the village.

Two late med and postmed properties in Church Brough were excavated, and related fieldwork was done. There was some pre-Conquest settlement; the castle was sited at a strategic junction and built over the Roman fort site. A village and market was planted by the castle, on the vicus site; subsequent removal of the market to the realigned Stainmore road created Market Brough. Both villages were in decline by mid-19th century.
