Abstract:
A programme of archaeological works was required by North Ayrshire Council in respect to the construction of the new Leisure Centre in Irvine. The first phase (1a) comprised the historic building recording of two 19th century buildings - the former police station and the former industrial school - occupying the site which were later demolished prior to the next phase. While the school showed no sign of large-scale changes, the police station revealed evidence of two phases of building. The next phase (1b) comprised two elements: evaluation trenching, and a watching briefs on site investigation and demolition works. While some areas had suffered significant disruption and truncation, large areas of survival were shown to be present. The final phase (2) of on-site works consisted of an across four areas. The excavation works revealed the remains of several features relating to the site's use as burgage plots with a continuous presence from the 12th century through to the modern day. Some of the larger pits on site had been either stone- or timber-lined suggesting evidence for industrial processing taking place during the medieval period. Potential cultivation slots, the base of two kilns/ovens and various other features point to some of the other activities also occurring throughout the medieval and post-medieval periods. A substantial quantity of artefacts were recovered from the site including glass, metalwork, ceramic, animal bone and wood. The ceramic assemblage was the most comprehensive with over roughly 1600 sherds of medieval or early post-medieval date, representing various fabrics.
