Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology carried out an evaluation and watching brief on the site of an extension to the college, associated access road and parking. The area adjacent to Sussex Downs College has been subject to a number of archaeological excavations in recent years, which have revealed evidence of Bronze Age, Iron Age, Romano-British, late medieval and post-medieval activity. The evaluation comprised the excavation of five test pits within the proposed building footprint. No archaeological features were encountered in any of the test pits, all of which showed an undisturbed sequence of natural deposits. The watching brief was maintained on all excavation within the development area and corroborated the deposit sequences recorded during the evaluation. However, a single north-east to south-west aligned ditch was recorded during the watching brief. The feature may be of Bronze Age date, a continuation of the field system identified at Pococks Field to the south, although no direct link can be assumed since it is on a different alignment and at some distance from that site.
