Abstract: |
A scheme of mitigation, involving a watching brief and area excavation, was carried out prior to site development. The earliest deposit encountered related to late medieval nightsoiling and cultivation, dated by ceramic to the mid-14th century. A timber-framed building was erected at the front of the site in the late 14th to 15th century. This structure was represented by rear and internal wall footings and cumulative floor surfaces associated with a stone and tile hearth. The building stood until the 18th century, when it was demolished and rebuilt in brick. The structure is identifiable on early OS maps, and survived until the 1980s when it too was demolished. |
