Abstract: |
In December 2012 - April 2013 (OA) undertook evaluation and watching briefs mitigate the below ground impact of modifications to School 21 . The evaluation and watching brief has determined that there is no conclusive evidence for any archaeological remains surviving at School 21 earlier than the 1st - 2nd century AD Roman period. The Roman activity consisted of ditches which served to act as boundaries and drainage features. These features were in the hinterland of the Channelsea River and the presence of the Roman features demonstrates that the settlement area seen to the south-west at Stratford Market Depot continues, but at an apparently lower density, into this northern area. The ditches contained a small assemblage of pottery including fragments of South Gaulish Samian wares. The secod area was occupied in the later post-medieval period. There was evidence of probable land divisions and potential organised drainage seen from the chalk built culverts. |
