Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Cedar Services Limited to undertake an archaeological watching brief at Winton Court, Andover, Hampshire (NGR 436559 145203) during the initial stages of a residential development. This watching brief was required as a condition of planning consent and followed an earlier archaeological field evaluation which recorded evidence of post-medieval activity within the site. The watching brief was undertaken between the 22nd to the 24th July 2013. The fieldwork has confirmed that much of the site has been reduced by the modern development at the site. Although a number of possible pits and postholes were located during the watching brief, these were modern or late post-medieval in date and were themselves truncated by later development. Consultation of the available cartographic sources has shown that this area of Andover has been subject to substantial remodelling throughout the modern period. On the 1850 tithe map a single structure is shown within the central part of the site. Subsequent later 19th and early 20th century mapping depicts structures along the southern boundary of the development area. These are replaced by the semi-detached residences in the centre of the site in the mid-20th century, which were demolished ahead of this redevelopment.
