Abstract: |
In August 2010, Terrain Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation at number 69 Mount Pleasant Avenue South, Weymouth, Dorset (centred on NGR SY67048140) prior to determination of full planning consent for its redevelopment. The site lies in an area of Weymouth long known to produce Roman artefacts and widely believed to form part of the immediate hinterland of a Roman port facility on Radipole Lake. Two trial trenches were mechanically excavated, south and east of the extant bungalow. No premodern features were discovered and no residual Roman finds were seen, suggesting the site lies at some distance from local foci of Roman activity. A large infilled feature seen in Trench 1 was probably originally a small quarry. This is likely to be of 19th century date and appears, on the basis of finds in its upper fills, to have been backfilled in the late 19th or early 20th century. |
