Abstract: |
ARCUS were commissioned by Haslam Homes to undertake a programme of archaeological excavation and watching briefs on land formerly constituting the 'five roads' area of the Flower Estate, Wincobank, Sheffield. Fieldwork was undertaken in January-March 2008 with subsequent specialist analysis on artefacts carried out from June-November 2008. The excavation area was located in the northeast corner of the proposed development area and targeted the remains of the former Wincobank Hall and associated outbuildings. Structures investigated within the excavation area included the remains of cellarage and ground level foundations from Wincobank Hall, two outbuildings, a stone well and a series of drains. Initial assessment of the remains of the cellar, outbuildings and associated artefacts excavated during the mitigation has provided a sequence of five provisional phases of structural development. |
