Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during groundworks relating to the creation of new footpaths at the Scheduled Monument site of Brougham Castle. This required the removal of topsoil across a linear route, rarely removing more than 0.18m and not extending beyond topsoil, Three areas of potential archaeological interest were encountered, two to the north of the existing curtain wall of the castle, and one to the west of the north-western curtain wall. They were sandstone blocks, two tying in with masonry breaks in the existing wall, which may date to the earlier original curtain wall. Some fragments of medieval pottery of 12th-14th century were retained, attesting to activity at the castle at this time. |
