Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology in March 2015 during building work at Shuttaford Farm, Holne. The site lies in the southeast corner of the parish, close to the river Dart. Shuttaford House is a grade II listed farm building. The layout perpetuates that of an earlier house which was first constructed as a three room and cross-passage house in the 16th century, with a later 17th century parlour wing and porch, and 20th century alterations. The work was therefore required by the Dartmoor National Park Authority. A watching brief was maintained during works associated with the construction of an extension to the existing building. A small foundation trench for the extension, 16.5m long, 0.6m wide and 0.75m deep, was excavated against the western side of Shuttaford House. The groundworks (Fig. 2) exposed a mid yellowish brown clay natural subsoil (102). This was in turn overlain by a 0.3m thick mid yellowish brown silty clay subsoil (101) underneath a 0.2m thick dark brown topsoil (100). No deposits, features or dating evidence indicative of archaeological activity was found. The lack of pottery and lithics from the site, despite examination of spoil heaps, further indicates that the site is archaeologically sterile. This is the only report on these works.
