Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief and excavation was carried out prior to the redevelopment of 14 Roger Street, Camden. The investigations comprised the monitoring of new service trenches, the monitoring and subsequent hand excavation within the footprint of a new lightwell, and further excavation for an associated sump. Five phases of archaeological activity were identified as overlying natural gravels and exclusively dated to the post-medieval period. Three phases of early to mid 17th century dumping/ground consolidation were interpretted as backfills for the former civil war defensive ditch which is documented as circumnavigating London by 1643. These backfills were overlain by later 17th to mid 18th century dump layers representing levelling as development began to encroach upon the subject site. |
