Abstract: |
LMD 229, Rodbridge Farm, Mills Lane, Long Melford: An archaeological monitoring was carried out during topsoil stripping for a new grain store. The monitored area measured approximately 33m x 25m and was adjacent to the southwest corner of Scheduled Ancient Monument SF226 - the site of a Roman villa (LMD 042). The topsoil was 200-300mm thick and directly overlay a natural stratum of stiff, light yellowish brown or greyish brown clay-with-flints (glacial till). No archaeological features were recorded and no artefacts were recovered. A north-south ditch, approximately 2m wide, was seen but not excavated along the eastern side of the stripped area. Its upper fill of redeposited glacial till contained fragments of modern brick and roofing slate. It is assumed to have been a former field boundary. |
