Abstract: |
In April 2013 Archaeological Research Services Ltd were commissioned by Galliford Try to undertake an archaeological watching brief at Little Haven, Harbour Drive, South Sheilds. An intermittent watching brief was carried out in order to monitor the most pertinent of groundworks, related to the realignment and reconstruction of the Little Haven sea wall and the construction of a new promenade, new car park and landscaping. The watching brief identified the remains of a World War 1seaplane ramp, which was part of a Royal Navy seaplane base. A large percentage of the ramp was buried under sand, however, in places it was still over 1 metre high. Also identified were four possible barrage balloon tethering blocks. These blocks were made of solid concrete and the full depth was unknown, suggesting that they were of a substantial size. South Shields was heavily bombed during World War 2 and the barrage balloons would have formed an intricate part of the town's anti-aircraft defence system. |
