Abstract: |
Archaeological mitigation was required as a condition of planning consent for the reopening of the quarry to provide stone for repairs at Chatsworth House and gardens. The fieldwork comprised the archaeological excavation of a trench in the location of the proposed bat house, and a walkover survey of the quarry area following tree removal. The trench revealed a thin sandy subsoil overlying fractured sandstone blocks in a loose sandy matrix, which continued beyond a depth of 1.8m. This may represent waste material from quarrying activities. The only artefact recorded was a short section of iron tramway rail, not in situ. The walkover survey revealed further details of two structures identified during the pre-application archaeological works. No new features were identified. |
