Abstract:
Between 2003 and 2004, Oxford Archaeology North (OA North) undertook two seasons of recording and excavation at the castle. The work comprised a pre-consolidation record of the fabric, an analysis of the development of the castle, and the excavation of a crossshaped evaluation trench, in the centre of the castle, to investigate the nature of the subsurface remains. A record of the consolidation works was maintained throughout their duration. The history of Bew Castle is extremely complex. Its position on the border with Scotland meant that it was particularly vulnerable to attack and was regularly involved in conflict, either caught up in the wars between the two nations or a specific target in feuds between border families, sometimes both. The present castle is a relatively late construction, of quadrangular form, without a keep. There is no evidence to suggest that it has origins earlier than the fourteenth century, although it does occupy a position used since the Roman period, and reuses masonry from earlier structures. Its use throughout the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries most probably resulted in a number of phases of repair, if not major rebuilding.
