Abstract: |
Bury St Edmunds, 33 Southgate Street (BSE 423, TL 8592 6361) evaluation trenching for a single dwelling development to the rear of the existing house on a site immediately adjacent to the course of the River Linnet, which now runs through a culvert, revealed a substantial depth of deposits. The trench was taken to a depth of 1.30m through layers of later Post medieval date to reveal the top of a large clay pad or platform with a small area apparently used as a hearth and an earlier clay wall type foundation. The former feature is likely to be of earlier Post medieval date and is perhaps best interpreted as a base for craft type activities close to a reliable water source. The earlier clay wall type foundation was associated with a few pottery sherds of medieval date. |
