Abstract:
This report assesses the archaeological resource and potential of a Proposed Development Area (PDA) within Carlton, South Yorkshire. The PDA is an 'L' shaped plot of land (2.51 hectares) which lies within the village's historic core. The PDA contains a number of historical standing buildings and which have been historically demolished. Carlton has been historically characterised by South Yorkshire Archaeology Service, as a historic settlement that is potentially of Anglo-Saxon date. There has been no previous archaeological excavation work, within the village so as yet, no evidence has been revealed and its archaeological resource never investigated. There is therefore a potential for further unknown archaeology within the PDA. Stud Farmhouse was built by Lord Wharncliffe who owned most of the village, in 1792. This assessment has identified a further farmstead, north of Stud Farm, which was demolished to facilitate construction of St John's church in 1879. The present range of historic buildings associated with Stud Farm date to at least the late 18th century and may predate the farmhouse.
